Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain, often presenting with a sharp or tabbing sensation during your very first steps in the morning.
Here is a patient-friendly breakdown from our team at Total Foot Care on what causes this condition, what to expect at your visit, and how you can find long-term relief.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
The plantar fascia is a thick, supportive band of tissue running along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. When this tissue becomes overly tight, it can experience irritation, inflammation, or even microscopic tears.
While the discomfort is usually sharpest right after waking up or sitting for a while, it often temporarily eases as you walk and warm up the foot. However, ignoring the pain can turn it into a chronic, constant issue that disrupts your daily life.
Diagnosis and Treatments
When you visit us for heel pain, we will likely take x-rays to rule out other structural issues like stress fractures or rare bone abnormalities. While x-rays frequently reveal a "heel spur," medical research shows that the spur itself is rarely the actual source of your pain. Instead, treatment focuses on calming the inflamed tissue.
A standard treatment plan typically includes a combination of conservative therapies:
Stretching and Mobility: Daily physical therapy exercises targeted at the foot and calf muscles.
Supportive Gear: Bracing, night splints, or custom orthotic shoe inserts to take pressure off the heel.
Inflammation Management: Regular icing of the foot or targeted steroid injections to manage severe pain.
Advanced Care: In rare, severe cases where conservative care fails, surgical options may be discussed.
Your Path to Recovery
The good news is that plantar fasciitis is highly treatable and often resolves on its own with the right interventions. Dr. Moore emphasizes that plantar fasciitis is a very self-limiting condition when patients stick 100% to their recovery plan. In fact, over 98% of our patients return to normal, pain-free daily living within just a few weeks.
To help you stay on track with your daily stretching and mobility goals outside of the clinic, Dr. Moore has created a guided stretching video. We highly encourage all our patients to follow along with [Dr. Moore's stretching video link] to reinforce your in-person instructions and improve overall lower extremity health and mobility.
